Frequently asked questions
What is EXIF data?
EXIF is hidden information that cameras and phones store inside a photo: the camera model, settings, date and time, and often the exact GPS location where it was taken.
Why remove the GPS location from photos?
If you share an original photo, anyone who downloads it can read where it was taken — which can reveal your home address. Many sites strip it automatically, but email, chat attachments and file-sharing links often don’t.
Does removing metadata reduce quality?
No. Only the metadata blocks are cut out; the image data is copied byte for byte. The one exception is a JPG stored sideways with a rotation tag — it’s re-saved upright at 95% quality so it doesn’t appear rotated.
Can I remove metadata from HEIC photos?
HEIC isn’t supported here. Convert the photos with HEIC to JPG first, then run the JPGs through this tool to check for and remove any remaining metadata.
