Frequently asked questions
How is Vietnamese personal income tax on a salary calculated?
Taxable income = taxable salary − compulsory insurance − family deductions (15.5M ₫ for you and 6.2M ₫ per dependant each month in 2026). The progressive tariff is then applied to that amount bracket by bracket.
What are the 2026 tax brackets?
Per month: 5% up to 10M ₫, 10% from 10M to 30M, 20% from 30M to 60M, 30% from 60M to 100M and 35% above 100M ₫. For a yearly settlement each limit is multiplied by 12.
Why might I get a refund at the end of the year?
Employers withhold tax month by month. If your income varied, you added dependants late, or you left a job mid-year, the tax on the full year can be lower than what was withheld — the settlement returns the difference.
Is the personal deduction counted for all 12 months?
Yes. In the yearly settlement the personal deduction counts for 12 months even if you worked only part of the year, while dependants count only for the months they were registered.
What income isn’t taxed?
Some allowances are exempt — for example lunch allowances within the limit, overtime premiums above normal pay, and certain one-off allowances. Leave those out of the taxable income you enter.
