Frequently asked questions
What changed for salaries in 2026?
From the 2026 tax year the personal deduction rose from 11M to 15.5M ₫ a month, the dependant deduction from 4.4M to 6.2M ₫, and the 7-bracket tariff became 5 brackets: 5% up to 10M, 10% to 30M, 20% to 60M, 30% to 100M and 35% above. From 1 July 2026 the base salary rose to 2.53M ₫, lifting the insurance ceiling to 50.6M ₫.
How much salary is tax-free in 2026?
With no dependants, tax starts only when gross minus insurance exceeds 15.5M ₫ — about 17.3M ₫ gross. Each dependant adds 6.2M ₫ to the tax-free amount.
What is the difference between gross and net salary?
Gross is the salary in your contract before deductions. Net is what reaches your bank account after the employee’s 10.5% insurance and personal income tax.
Which region am I in?
Regions I–IV follow the minimum wage decree: central Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are Region I, other cities and provinces are II–IV. The region only matters for the unemployment insurance ceiling on very high salaries.
Does it work for foreigners?
Yes, for tax residents (183+ days a year in Vietnam). Foreign employees with a work permit pay social and health insurance but not unemployment insurance, so their real net may be 1% higher. Non-residents pay a flat 20% with no deductions.
