Frequently asked questions

Which UTM parameters are required?

Google Analytics only needs utm_source, but always add utm_medium and utm_campaign too — otherwise traffic is hard to group in reports.

Should UTM values be lowercase?

Yes. Analytics is case-sensitive, so "Facebook" and "facebook" show up as two different sources.

Should I use UTM links on my own website?

No. UTM tags on internal links overwrite the visitor's original source and start a new session. Use them only on links from other places.

The URL is very long — can I shorten it?

Yes. Shorten it with the URL Shortener or put it in a QR code; the UTM parameters still reach your analytics.
