Who converts USD to VND
Travellers to Vietnam, expats paid in dollars, freelancers invoicing US clients and families sending remittances all convert dollars to đồng. Because one dollar buys tens of thousands of đồng, even small amounts turn into long numbers — the converter does the zeros for you.
Good to know
Vietnam writes thousands with dots and decimals with commas: 1.000.000 ₫ is one million đồng. Prices are often shortened to "k" (50k = 50,000 ₫) or "triệu" (1 triệu = 1,000,000 ₫).
Banks and licensed exchange counters buy cash dollars below the reference rate shown here. Crisp, recent $100 bills get the best rate; old-series, torn or marked notes may be refused or bought for less.
Shops, taxis and restaurants are supposed to price and charge in đồng, so plan to exchange or withdraw đồng rather than pay in dollars.

Frequently asked questions
Is the rate here the rate I will get at a bank?
No. This is a daily mid-market reference rate. Banks buy dollars a little below it and sell a little above it, and card payments add the card network’s rate plus any foreign transaction fee.
Do I need to declare dollars when entering Vietnam?
Yes, if you carry more than USD 5,000 (or the equivalent in other foreign currency) or more than 15,000,000 ₫ in cash, you must declare it to customs on arrival.
