How to Remove Location Data From Photos Before You Share Them

By Admin Editor · October 5, 2026

Every photo your phone takes carries hidden information called EXIF metadata. Along with the camera model and the date, it often includes the exact GPS coordinates of where the photo was taken. Share a photo of your new sofa and you may also be sharing your home address.

What's hidden in a photo

  • GPS location — latitude and longitude, often accurate to a few metres.
  • Date and time the photo was taken.
  • Camera and lens — for example, the phone model.
  • Software used to edit it.
  • Author or copyright fields, sometimes with your name.

When metadata gets shared

Many big social networks strip metadata when you post publicly. But plenty of routes keep the original file intact:

  • Email attachments.
  • Cloud and file-sharing links.
  • "Send as file" or "document" options in messaging apps.
  • Online marketplaces, forums and websites that store your upload as-is.

If you're not sure, assume the location goes with the photo.

How to remove metadata from photos

  1. Open the free EXIF Metadata Remover.
  2. Choose up to 20 photos — JPG, PNG or WebP.
  3. Click Remove metadata.
  4. Check what was found — any GPS location is highlighted — and download the clean copies, one by one or as a ZIP.

Your photos are cleaned in your browser and never uploaded.

No quality loss

The tool cuts out the metadata blocks and copies the image data byte for byte — the photo isn't re-compressed, so quality is identical. Colour profiles are kept so the photo looks the same.

The one exception: a JPG stored sideways with a "rotate me" tag would display rotated once that tag is gone, so it's re-saved upright at 95% quality instead.

Stop adding location in the first place

  • iPhone: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Camera → Never.
  • Android: open the Camera app's settings and turn off the option usually called Location tags or Save location (the name varies by phone).

Existing photos keep their data, so clean those before sharing.
