Add Page Numbers to PDF

Number the pages of a PDF in the header or footer — left, center or right — as 1, 1 / 10 or "Page 1 of 10", and skip the cover page if you like.

72 pt = 1 inch (2.54 cm).

Your PDF is numbered entirely in your browser and never uploaded. Files up to 100 MB are supported.

How to use this tool

  1. 1Choose your PDF file.
  2. 2Pick where the numbers go (top or bottom; left, center or right) and a format such as 1, 1 / 10 or "Page 1 of 10".
  3. 3Optionally change the first number, font size and distance from the edge, or skip the cover page.
  4. 4Click Add page numbers and download the numbered PDF.

Features

  • Six positions in the header or footer.
  • Four formats: 1, 1 / 10, Page 1 of 10, and - 1 -.
  • Start at any number — handy when the PDF is one chapter of a longer document.
  • Skip the first page so a cover stays clean; numbering starts on page 2.
  • Rotated and landscape pages are numbered the way they appear on screen.

Privacy

Your PDF is numbered entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server.

Frequently asked questions

If I skip the cover, what number does page 2 get?

The first number you choose (1 by default). Set it to 2 if the cover should count as page 1.

What do the point sizes mean?

PDFs measure in points: 72 points = 1 inch (2.54 cm). An 11 pt number with a 28 pt (about 1 cm) margin suits most documents.

Can I number only some pages?

Every page from the first (or second, if you skip the cover) is numbered. To number part of a document, split it, number that part, then merge the files again.

Does it work with password-protected PDFs?

No — remove the password first with Unlock PDF.
