How to Write a Number in Words: Checks, Invoices and Contracts

By Admin Editor · October 26, 2026

Checks, contracts and many invoices ask for the amount twice: once in figures and once in words. The words are the legal safeguard — it's much harder to turn "one thousand" into "nine thousand" than to add a stroke to a 1. Here's how to write amounts in words correctly, and how to do it instantly.

The basic rules

  • Write numbers from 21 to 99 with a hyphen: twenty-one, forty-five, ninety-nine.
  • Group by thousands: one million two hundred fifty thousand.
  • Scale words stay singular: "two million", not "two millions".
  • English uses the short scale: a billion is 1,000,000,000 (a thousand million).

"And" or no "and"?

Both styles are correct; they're just regional.

  • American: "and" marks the decimal point only — one hundred five dollars and fifty cents.
  • British: "and" also follows the hundreds — one hundred and five.

Pick one style and use it throughout a document.

Writing the amount on a check

The cents are written as a fraction of 100, and a line fills any empty space so nothing can be added:

$1,234.56 → One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100 dollars

If there are no cents, write and 00/100. Start writing at the far left of the line, and draw a line through the remaining space.

The same amount in "dollars and cents" style — common on invoices and contracts — reads: One thousand two hundred thirty-four dollars and fifty-six cents.

Decimals and large numbers

For a plain number, read each decimal digit after "point": 2,500.5 is two thousand five hundred point five. Very large figures follow the same pattern with bigger scale words — trillion, quadrillion and beyond.

Amounts in Vietnamese (bằng chữ)

Invoices in Vietnam must show the total in words, and the reading has its own rules: mốt and lăm after tens, linh or lẻ for a zero in the tens place, and nghìn (northern) or ngàn (southern) for thousand. For example, 1,250,000 ₫ is Một triệu hai trăm năm mươi nghìn đồng.

How to convert a number to words

  1. Open Number to Words and type the amount, e.g. 1,250,000.75.
  2. Choose English or Vietnamese.
  3. In English, pick plain, dollars and cents or check writing, and tick the British "and" if you want it.
  4. In Vietnamese, choose linh/lẻ, nghìn/ngàn and whether to add "đồng".
  5. Copy the result into your check, invoice or contract.

The converter handles negative numbers and up to 30 digits before the decimal point, exactly — no rounding errors on huge figures.

FAQ

Should the first word be capitalised? Yes, on checks and invoices the amount usually starts with a capital letter: One thousand…

What if the words and the figures don't match? For checks, banks generally treat the words as the amount that counts. Always double-check both.

Is "one hundred and five" wrong in the US? Not wrong, just British. On American checks it's usual to keep "and" for the cents.
