Vietnamese Marriage Compatibility (Xem Tuổi Vợ Chồng)

Check how well a couple’s lunar birth years match in Vietnamese tradition: life element, heavenly stems, zodiac animals, life palace (Cung phi) and its element — scored out of 10, plus Kim Lâu wedding years.

Husband / groom

Only the lunar year matters for this method — the day and month of birth don’t change the result.

Wife / bride

Only the lunar year matters for this method — the day and month of birth don’t change the result.

Enter both lunar birth years to compare them.

Based on Vietnamese folk methods (nạp âm, Can Chi, Bát Trạch). Schools differ and this is tradition, not science — a low score doesn’t decide a marriage. Calculated in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.

How to use this tool

  1. 1Enter the husband’s and the wife’s lunar birth years — or their Gregorian dates of birth, which are converted for you.
  2. 2Read the score out of 10 and the verdict for each of the five checks.
  3. 3Look at the list of coming years to see when the bride is not in a Kim Lâu year, the traditional check for wedding years.

Features

  • Five traditional checks, 2 points each: life element (nạp âm), heavenly stems, earthly branches, life palace (Cung phi) and the palaces’ elements.
  • Detects Tam Hợp and Lục Hợp harmonies, and Lục Xung, Lục Hại and Tương Hình clashes.
  • Cung phi computed separately for men and women, compared by the eight Bát Trạch relations.
  • Kim Lâu check for the bride over the next six lunar years.
  • Converts Gregorian birthdays to the right lunar year (January babies born before Tết belong to the previous year).

Frequently asked questions

What is “xem tuổi vợ chồng”?

A Vietnamese custom of comparing a couple’s birth years before a wedding. Families look at whether the two years’ elements, Can Chi and life palaces support or clash with each other.

Why does the lunar year matter and not my birthday?

The method only uses the lunar birth year (its Can Chi and element). Someone born in January or early February before Tết belongs to the previous lunar year — enter the date of birth and the tool works that out.

What if our score is low?

Different almanacs weigh the checks differently, and this is tradition rather than science. Many families who still care about it choose a good wedding year and date instead, or do nothing at all.

What is a Kim Lâu year?

A year in which the bride’s traditional age (tuổi mụ) divided by 9 leaves 1, 3, 6 or 8. Tradition advises against marrying in such a year.
