Frequently asked questions

How strong is the protection?

Files are encrypted with AES-256. With a long, unique password, the content can’t realistically be opened without it.

What happens if I forget the password?

It can’t be recovered — not by us or anyone else. Keep a copy of the original file or store the password in a password manager.

What do the print and copy permissions do?

They tell PDF readers what someone may do after opening the file with the password. Most readers respect them, but they are a deterrent rather than a guarantee.

Can I protect a PDF that already has a password?

Unlock it first with Unlock PDF, then add the new password here.
