Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a percentage increase?
Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value, and multiply by 100. Going from 50 to 75 is (75 − 50) ÷ 50 × 100 = 50% increase.
How do I increase a number by a percentage?
Multiply the number by (1 + percent ÷ 100). Increasing 200 by 15% gives 200 × 1.15 = 230.
Why can’t I calculate an increase from zero?
A percentage change is relative to the starting value, and anything divided by zero is undefined. Going from 0 to 5 can’t be expressed as a percentage.
Is a 50% increase followed by a 50% decrease back to the start?
No. 100 up 50% is 150, and 150 down 50% is 75. The decrease is applied to a bigger number, so you end up lower than where you began.
