How to Create SEO URL Slugs from Multilingual Titles

By Admin Editor · October 27, 2026

A useful URL slug tells a reader what a page is about without requiring the full headline. For multilingual content, that involves more than replacing spaces: accents, punctuation, and scripts can behave differently in a slug generator.

Use the Slug Generator to prepare a readable path segment, then review the result before saving it in your CMS. A generated slug is a starting point, not a uniqueness check or a promise of better rankings.

An accented title converted into a readable lowercase URL slug

Start with a descriptive title

Imagine an article called Café Tips & Tricks. With default settings, this generator produces:

cafe-tips-and-tricks

The accented letter becomes an ASCII letter, the ampersand becomes the word and, and the words are joined with hyphens. Lowercase output helps keep naming consistent across editors and systems.

Google's URL structure guidance recommends simple, descriptive URLs and hyphens between words. A clear slug helps people recognize a destination, but it is only one part of a page's usefulness and discoverability.

Understand what transliteration preserves

This generator removes combining accents and maps certain additional Latin letters, including Vietnamese đ, to readable ASCII equivalents. For example, an accented Latin title can remain recognizable after conversion.

It is not a general translation system. Non-Latin writing can be removed by the ASCII word filter, so a title written entirely in another script may produce an empty or incomplete result. Review every multilingual slug manually. You may choose an approved translation or a consistent romanization, depending on your site's editorial policy.

Do not assume two different titles always produce different slugs. Accented and unaccented versions can collapse to the same value. Your CMS or application must detect collisions and decide whether to use a different phrase or a stable suffix.

Choose options for readability

The tool supports hyphens or underscores, lowercase conversion, removal of common English stop words, and a maximum length. For ordinary English article URLs, lowercase words separated by hyphens are a reasonable convention.

Stop-word removal is optional. Removing the or of can shorten a long phrase, but keeping a natural expression may make the path easier to understand. Compare the result rather than treating the shortest output as automatically best.

A maximum length generally keeps whole words. If the first word alone exceeds the limit, the generator truncates that word instead of returning nothing. Check that a short limit has not cut away the subject that makes the page distinctive. There is no universal slug length that guarantees search visibility.

Check the complete URL before publication

A slug is only one path segment. Add it to the intended category or language route and verify the full address. Avoid repeating the same term unnecessarily in both a category and the slug, but follow the established structure of your site.

Then check the page title, canonical URL, internal links, and sitemap entry. These need to refer to the final destination consistently. The generator cannot inspect your server's routes or confirm that the address is available.

If you need to encode a value inside a query string, use the URL Encoder instead. Slug generation changes text for a readable name; percent encoding preserves a component for transport. They solve different problems.

Treat changes to published slugs as a migration

Once a page is public, changing its slug can break bookmarks and external links. Record the old and new addresses, configure a suitable redirect, and update internal references. Test that the redirect reaches the intended page without a loop or an unnecessary chain.

Do not regenerate old slugs automatically whenever a headline changes. A minor editorial update usually does not require a new URL. Stability makes sharing and maintenance easier.

Frequently asked questions

Does the tool guarantee a unique slug?

No. It transforms text and does not query your CMS. Check for an existing page with the same route before saving.

Should I remove accents from every language?

That is an editorial and technical choice. This tool creates ASCII slugs; it does not establish that Unicode URLs are invalid or unsuitable.

Can I use the output as an entire URL?

No. It is a path segment. Add the correct protocol, domain, and route, then test the complete destination.
