IQ Test

A free online IQ test with two modes: an adaptive matrix-reasoning test on a calibrated, open item bank, scored with item response theory and a margin of error, and a quick 30-question practice test with worked answers.

Choose a test

Full IQ test (adaptive)

12–25 matrix puzzles · about 20–30 minutes

Calibrated figural matrices that adapt to you: each answer decides how hard the next puzzle is. Scored with item response theory, with a margin of error.

Quick practice test

30 mixed questions · 25 minutes

Patterns, number and letter series, words and logic, with a worked answer for every question. Good for practice; the score is a rough estimate.

How to use this tool

  1. 1Choose the full adaptive test (about 20–30 minutes) or the quick 30-question practice test (25 minutes).
  2. 2In the full test, build the missing bottom-right cell of each 3 × 3 puzzle by tapping pieces, then confirm. Two practice puzzles show you how it works.
  3. 3Keep going until the test stops by itself — after 12 to 25 puzzles, once your score is precise enough.
  4. 4Read your estimated IQ, its 90% range and percentile, then open the review to compare your cells with the correct ones.
  5. 5In the practice test, tap one answer per question, skip and come back as you like, and read the worked explanation for every question at the end.

Features

  • Adaptive test on the Open Matrices Item Bank: 217 figural matrices calibrated on 2,572 people, published under the GPL-3.0 licence.
  • Each answer updates your ability estimate and the next puzzle is the most informative one for you, so the test is short but precise.
  • Scored with a 2-parameter item response theory model (EAP estimate), shown with a 90% range instead of a falsely exact number.
  • You build the answer from 20 pieces rather than picking from a list, so guessing hardly works.
  • A separate 30-question practice test covering patterns, number and letter series, words and logic, with worked answers.
  • Works on phones: puzzles are drawn as sharp vector graphics with large tap targets.

Privacy

Both tests run entirely in your browser. Your answers and score are not sent to a server or saved anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a real IQ test?

The full test uses the same kind of puzzle as Raven’s Progressive Matrices and scores them with the same IRT methods as professional tests, on an item bank calibrated by researchers. It measures non-verbal reasoning only and is taken unsupervised, so it is a good estimate, not a clinical assessment. A formal IQ test is given in person by a psychologist.

How is the score calculated?

Each puzzle has a known difficulty and discrimination. After every answer, your ability (θ) is estimated from all your answers with a 2-PL model. The calibration sample were medical-school applicants, whose average is assumed to equal IQ 110, so IQ = 110 + 15 × θ. The 90% range is ±1.645 standard errors.

Why do I get harder puzzles after a correct answer?

That is how adaptive testing works: the next puzzle is chosen to be about as hard as your current estimate, where it tells the most about you. Expect to miss some — that is normal and doesn’t lower your score unfairly.

Why do people get different numbers of puzzles?

The test stops once your score is precise enough (standard error 0.3, about ±5 IQ points) or after 25 puzzles. Very high or very low scores need more puzzles, because the bank has fewer items at the extremes.

What is a good IQ score?

About half of people score between 90 and 109, the average range. 110–119 is high average, 120–129 very high and 130 or more extremely high — roughly the top 2%.

Where do the puzzles come from?

From the Open Matrices Item Bank by Koch, Spinath, Greiff and Becker (Journal of Intelligence, 2022), released under the GPL-3.0 licence. The practice test’s 30 questions were written for this site.
