The short answer
At an average adult reading pace of roughly 238 words per minute, 1,000 words takes about 4 minutes and 12 seconds to read silently. A slow reader (about 150 wpm) needs around 6 and a half minutes; a fast reader (300 wpm) about 3 minutes and 20 seconds.
How reading time is calculated
Reading time (minutes) = word count ÷ words per minute
A 1,500-word article at 238 wpm: 1,500 ÷ 238 ≈ 6.3 minutes, so "6 min read".
Most blogs round to the nearest minute. It's an estimate, not a promise.
What affects reading speed
- Type of text. Fiction and light articles read faster; technical, legal or academic text is slower.
- Familiarity. Readers who know the topic skim more comfortably.
- Purpose. Reading to learn is slower than reading for enjoyment or skimming for a fact.
- Screen vs paper and the layout. Long lines, dense paragraphs and small fonts all slow readers down.
